Culture on Mull
Mull has a long tradition of culture in the Hebrides, and in 2013 there was a merger between An Tobar and the Mull Theatre resulting in Comar (comar.co.uk) a multi-arts organisation bringing creativity in various media to life. Throughout the year there are around 100 events, please see the website for up to date information.
Iona Abbey sits on this tiny island off Mull, it is a pilgrimage for many, as it was the birthplace of Christianity in great Britain, having been established by St Columba when he came from Ireland in AD563. You will also discover an abundance of flora and fauna on Iona as well as aspiring and recognised artists who visit each year to paint.
Calgary Art In Nature is a tearoom at the north end of the island just a few minutes’ walk from the white sands of Calgary Beach. It’s a tearoom with a difference, exhibiting art and local crafts for sale. Recommended by Lonely Planet Guide.
Each year there is the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival, celebrating chamber music at various locations on Mull and Iona. Renowned composer Felix Mendelssohn stayed on Mull and produced the overture The Hebrides also known as Fingals Cave shortly after his visit to the isle of Staffa.
